Welp it is that time of year again, shift change time that is. Every summer, Brandon bids on what shift he will be on for the next 12 months. Bidding goes by rank and seniority within that rank. Brandon just got promoted to corporal in December so he was pretty low within his rank. He bid on day's first and the midnight shift( 10pm-8am) second. We found out in early August that he would be on mids...bummer. It was something we were pretty much expecting but still hoping for some luck to shift our way. As you may or may not remember, when Benjamin was born, Brandon was on mids. I thought I would hate the shift but it turns out I didn't really mind it much and here is why:
Midnight Shift Pros:
*On Brandon's days off, he stays up all night to maintain his night owl schedule. He cleans grocery shops, and does his homework so that helps me out greatly!
*On Brandon's days on, he sleeps until 4 when the kids go to wake him up. His average getting home time on day shift is 6pm, so we are seeing him lots more on his working days.
*Evenings free! With 2 kids each in 3 activities, it is nice to know he will be around to help transport and watch those events, with day shift he often was still working during practices/games.
(First night staying up, DEEP cleaned the fridge for the first time in 5 years!!! I can't believe we went that long...ew)
The two major down sides to mids are that he is always tired. He is constantly adjusting his sleep schedule and that isn't easy for anyone to do. The only other main downer from last time around is that every day he will be sleeping until at least noon, even on his days off. This means that every day for the next 365 days, I will be the one getting up with the kids at 6:25 am :(
Snuggling with a newborn Benjamin and 2 year old Annie one morning after work
Wish us luck!
