Easter Egg Dying 2013

This year for Easter, we weren't quite as organized as we usually are. We usually have a big Easter egg dying session where we dye lots of eggs and write inappropriate things on them and let the kids decorate them with stickers and wrappers. This year we were lucky we got in a dying session at all!

Mim had read about a tie-dye method where you take silk dyes, wrap them around eggs and boil them in vinegar. The print on the tie is supposed to transfer onto the egg. She bought a bunch of silk ties from the thrift store and over nap, Kellie and I ripped out all of the seams. Mim cut the ties into 5x7 squares then we wrapped them, print facing the non-hard boiled egg. We took the cotton lining and tightly wrapped the eggs up and rubberbanded them in place. Boiled a pot of water with some vinegar, dropped the eggs in and waited. 

 After 10 min of boiling, we took them out of the water and let cooled. After unwrapping the eggs we got some great successes and some not so great. We decided that next year we need to wrap the ties much tighter and use more rubber-bands  These eggs aren't editable since the dye used on the ties isn't food grade, but it was a fun project none the less!

While the adult egg dying project was going on, I prepped the kids to do their Easter egg dying. We just bought the basic dying kit with 5 dyes. I had hard boiled some eggs over nap so we were ready to go. Benjamin was still crabby pants Mcgee due to his teeth so he hung out with daddy while Grandma and I helped the kids dye eggs. They had fun picking out their colors and dunking the eggs in. It was a much calmer easter egg dying adventure then normal, but it was so nice! We didn't have crayons or fancy decorative tools but that almost made it better since there wasn't a overwhelming amount of options.

Our lovely finished project. I then proceeded to leave them out on the counter for way to long so I didn't even get to make colorful egg salad..bummer.
