Moving Surprises

Brandon and I spent a lot of time going around in circles discussing the pro's and con's of putting an offer in on this house. My biggest concern was that we would buy and and all sorts of things would start to go wrong and we would run out of money to fix them. We knew moving in that we had electrical work that needed to be done, 50% of the windows needed to be replaces( half were new) as well as several cosmetic updates. What I was most worried about were those little glitches that we couldn't see. My dad gave us great advice ahead of time and said if you want this house get it. Don't worry about what can go wrong. If stuff does go wrong, own it. If the whole house flooded on night one from broken pipes, just accept it and be happy to be in your new home...this advice came in handy almost immediately.

We had several projects lined up for the first few days in our new home. We had a new garage door installed, new washer and dryer installed, new furniture dropped off and so on. Lowe's installed our washer and dryer on Tuesday and on Thursday when I went to do our first load of laundry, the laundry room flooded. Long story short, we have a unique set up and the installation gusy put the drain pipe in a empty spot next to the water lines. When the water drained, it didn't go down the drain, it went down the dry wall and all over the floor..awesome. After figuring out what was wrong and talking to Lowe's management several times,they fixed the problem and bought our kids three new mattress to replace the three that got flooded. We finally got everything situated by Friday evening. The rooms were all done being painted but we couldn't have the kids down there because they didn't have any mattresses! Nothing like adding a bit of madness to the chaos!

Through the course of that first week we also realized both the toilet flushing mechanism were broken. The one downstairs ran constantly and was being held together by a string. The one upstairs by a zip tie. They would need to be replaced.

 I went to Lowe's to make copies of keys only to have Brandon find out at 3am that they didn't work. Come to find out the ONE key they gave us didn't work on the bolt, only the bottom lock.That would need to be replaced as well.

 The weekend after Mim finished painting the kids room her and Jeff helped replace toilet flusher and change locks on doors( including the main bathroom which stuck). Sunday morning she also noticed our fridge was leaking. After doing a little investigating and talking to a couple people with far more knowledge then us, we decided that the fridge was broke and needed to be replaced. Awesome.

All of this coupled with the fact that the house was not cleaned before we moved in AND they left a big screen old school TV and refused to move it out AND left dog poop covering the back yard....I was ready for a break down. However, my dad's advice rang in my ears and no matter what, I still loved this house and bit by bit we were fixing it up and making it our own. We still have lots and lots of projects to do before I will feel like its how I want it to be. But for now, I am thankful the surprises are done and we are settling in.
